Create your first product
Lesson 5 of 20 9 min
Lesson 5 of 20
The product form is where most of your time goes. This lesson explains every field that matters and which ones you can leave for later.
Name and descriptions
Name. Use the words a customer would type: product type, key feature, color. "Leather boot, black" beats "Model 4471".
Short description. One or two sentences that appear in lists and near the price. Say what it is and who it is for.
Description. The full text, with formatting. Aim for at least 50 words. Kambloo's SEO health check flags product descriptions shorter than that as thin content. Lesson 4 covers how to write it.
Organization
Brand and categories. Pick the brand and one or more categories you created in lesson 1.
Tax class. Required. The VAT rate on invoices comes from here.
Status. Leave it as draft until images and stock are in. Then set it to active.
Pricing
Price. The selling price, VAT included. Kambloo shows prices with tax to customers and writes them with tax into structured data.
Compare-at price. The crossed-out "was" price. Use it only when the product really sold at that price. A false original price is a fake-discount practice and a legal risk.
Cost. What the product costs you. Customers never see it. Kambloo uses it for profit reporting, so it is worth filling in.
Shipping data
Weight in grams. Shipping rates are calculated from weight and dimensions, so this field is not optional if you charge for shipping.
Images
Upload several images to the gallery and drag them into order. The first image is the main one on category pages and in feeds. Kambloo converts each upload into modern formats and several sizes, so you do not need to resize anything yourself.
Guidelines that hold across categories:
- Show the product on a plain background first, then in use.
- Use the same aspect ratio for every product, so grids look tidy.
- Write alt text that describes the image. Kambloo can fill missing alt text from the product name as a quick fix, but a real description is better for accessibility and search.
Product video by file upload or by YouTube and Vimeo embed is also supported.
SKU, barcode and stock
Even a simple product has one hidden default variant, and stock lives there. The form shows these fields directly:
- SKU. Your own code for the item. It must be unique in your store. Pick a scheme and stick to it, for example
BOOT-BLK-42. - Barcode. The EAN or GTIN if the product has one. Shopping feeds and structured data use it, and Google Merchant Center expects it.
- Quantity. Units in stock. Kambloo keeps a separate reserved count for orders that are placed but not yet paid, so saleable stock is quantity minus reserved.
- Low stock threshold. When stock falls to this number, you get a notification. Leave it empty for no alert.
You can also choose to unpublish a product automatically when it sells out.
Related products
The product form has a relations tab for upsells and cross-sells. Add two to four products that go well with this one. They appear as suggestions in the cart. Kambloo reports the revenue that comes from these suggestions, so you can see whether your picks work.
SEO tab
Every product form has an SEO tab with title, description, canonical, robots and social image. You can leave it empty for now. Kambloo fills the title and description from a template until you write your own. Module 6 covers this.
Publish and check
Set the status to active and open the product on your storefront. Check three things: the main image, the price with VAT, and the add-to-cart button. Then place it in the cart and look at the shipping cost.
Common mistakes
- Uploading one image. Customers cannot judge a product from a single photo.
- Using the supplier's product code as the customer-facing name.
- Setting a compare-at price the product never had.
- Leaving weight empty and wondering why shipping shows as free or fails.
- Publishing with zero stock. The product shows as out of stock and cannot be bought.
Apply this in your store: create one complete product, set it to active, and place a sandbox order for it from the storefront.
