Upsell
Definition
An upsell offers the customer a higher-value version of what they are about to buy: a larger size, a better model, or a bundle with extras. It raises average order value without needing more traffic. A good upsell is relevant and easy to decline; a pushy one costs trust.
Why it matters for your store
The customer has already decided to buy. That is the cheapest moment to earn more, because no acquisition cost is involved and the attention is already there. A well-placed upsell adds a few percent to the order value on a share of orders, which compounds over a year.
The rule is relevance. The offer must be a clear improvement on what the customer chose, priced close enough to feel like a small step. And it must be easy to say no. An upsell that blocks the checkout or hides the decline button trades one larger order for a lost customer.
Measure it. Revenue that came from suggestions should be visible separately, or you will never know whether the strip is working.
How Kambloo handles it
You define upsell and cross-sell relations directly in the product form, so each product can name the products to suggest alongside it. The cart drawer shows an "Add these too" strip with two to four suggestions, drawn from those relations first.
As order history builds, a nightly job counts which products are bought together over the last 90 days and adds "frequently bought together" suggestions from that data. It is plain counting, so the results are explainable and cheap.
Items added from the strip are tagged, and the growth dashboard reports the revenue that came from suggestions as its own line.
Questions about Upsell
What is the difference between an upsell and a cross-sell?
An upsell replaces the item with a better or bigger version of the same thing. A cross-sell adds a different, complementary item. A larger coffee bag is an upsell; a grinder is a cross-sell.
Where does an upsell work best?
On the product page before the choice is final, and in the cart just before checkout. Offers placed after the order is complete work too, but they need saved payment details to stay one click.
