Headless Commerce

Definition

Headless commerce separates the storefront (the head) from the commerce engine that manages products, carts, orders, and payments, and connects the two through APIs. Developers can build any front end, such as a custom website or a mobile app, on top of the same backend. It offers flexibility at the cost of building and maintaining the front end yourself.

Why it matters for your store

Headless is attractive when the standard storefront is the constraint: a brand with an unusual design, a buying flow that does not fit product-cart-checkout, or a native app that needs the same catalog. It is a poor fit when the goal is simply a nicer theme, because the store then owns a front end codebase, its hosting, its SEO, and its performance, which are exactly the things a platform storefront handles.

There is a middle ground. A platform storefront that is fast and customizable, plus an API and webhooks for the systems around it, covers most stores that think they want headless.

How Kambloo handles it

Kambloo ships a complete storefront: server-rendered, themeable, translated into five languages, with SEO and structured data built in. For most stores that is the head, and it needs no development.

Around it, each store has a REST API with scoped access tokens for products, variants, orders, customers, and stock, and outgoing webhooks for order, product, customer, and stock events. That is enough to connect an ERP, an accounting tool, a warehouse system, or a custom integration.

The REST API and the outgoing webhooks are the seam a custom front end would use today: the same product, category, cart and order data the storefront renders.

Questions about Headless Commerce

Do I need headless commerce for my store?

Most stores do not. A themed storefront that is fast, SEO-ready, and customizable covers the usual needs. Headless makes sense when you have developers and a reason a standard storefront cannot meet, such as a bespoke app or an unusual buying flow.

Is Kambloo headless?

Kambloo ships a complete server-rendered storefront and exposes a REST API and webhooks for integrations, so a custom front end reads the same data the storefront does.
