Customer Retention

Definition

Retention is the share of customers who come back and buy again within a given period. It is the counterpart of acquisition: acquisition fills the store with first-time buyers, and retention decides whether they become regulars. Repeat customers cost less to reach and usually spend more per order than new ones.

Why it matters for your store

Acquisition gets more expensive every year as ad prices rise. Retention is the part of growth you control. A store that keeps a quarter of its first-time buyers grows on the same ad budget; a store that keeps almost none has to buy every order twice.

Retention starts with operations. A parcel that arrives on time, matches the listing, and can be returned without a fight is the strongest retention tool there is. After that come the reminders: a thank-you after the first order, a note when a wishlisted item drops in price, a nudge when the usual reorder time has passed.

The second purchase should be easier than the first. Saved addresses and saved cards remove most of the typing.

How Kambloo handles it

Customer accounts store addresses, order history, and favourites, and saved cards are held as provider tokens so a repeat checkout is a few taps. Lifecycle automations cover the main retention moments: welcome sequence, thanks after the first order with a second-order coupon, back-in-stock and price-drop alerts for wishlisted products, birthday coupons, review requests after delivery, and win-back at 30, 60, and 90 days.

Every marketing message passes the consent check before sending, and a one-click unsubscribe is included by default. Rule-based segments let you treat frequent buyers differently from one-time buyers.

Questions about Customer Retention

How do I measure retention?

Take the customers who made their first purchase in a month and check how many of them ordered again within the next 30, 60, or 90 days. Tracking this per monthly cohort shows whether retention is improving.

What has the biggest effect on retention?

The first experience: delivery speed, product accuracy, and how returns are handled. Marketing automations help afterwards, but they cannot repair a bad first order.
